What Romanian makers do well
Solid wood, by hand and by machine. The workshops we follow combine traditional joinery with CNC, in studios of two to fifteen people. They work the wood they grew up with, walnut from the south, oak and ash from Transylvania, beech from the Carpathians, and they know what it does in a dry Dutch living room.
Series that a gallery or a retailer can plan around. Not one-offs only: many of these makers can repeat a piece twenty or two hundred times, to the same standard, on a schedule. That is what design retail needs and what most craft studios cannot promise.
Producing your design. Several workshops are open to making a designer's or a brand's piece, in their material and their hands, with the brand's name on it. Romania has done this for furniture at scale for decades; the same is now possible at the craft end.
